Editing the plan

The plan page — 02 Plan — shows what a run will do: who will use the product and what they want to get done. Setup proposes it; everything on it except the product’s name, description, address and focus is yours to change.

The top of the page shows the product’s host, its name and description, and the Focus: you gave setup, if any.

One card per person. Every field on a card is edited in place:

  • The name, at the top of the card — up to 100 characters.
  • The brief below it, saying what the person is like — up to 2,000 characters. Write it to the person, in the second person: their situation, how patient they are, what they care about. Keep the product out of it — telling a person where things are defeats the point of watching them look.
  • Signs in as — which test account the person uses. It appears once the project has one.

Add a person adds an empty card, up to 12 people. × removes a person; the last one cannot be removed.

Each person uses the product in their own session, one after another, so every person you add makes a run longer and costs more. The estimate on the Start panel counts the people in the saved plan.

The goals, numbered in the order the people pursue them. Every person works through every goal, and marks each one reached or failed.

  • Up to 20 goals, each up to 1,000 characters.
  • Add a goal adds an empty one at the end; × removes one; the last one cannot be removed.

Write a goal as the outcome, not the steps: invite a teammate to the workspace, not open Settings and click Members. A goal a person can see done in the browser gives the clearest answer; an opinion or a decision about the product is not a goal they can reach.

Changes to people and goals stay on your screen until you save them. As soon as something changes, a bar appears at the bottom — You changed the plan. — with Discard and Save plan. Leaving the page with unsaved changes makes the browser ask first.

While there are unsaved changes, the Start panel says Save or discard your changes to the plan first. and Start run is disabled, so a run always starts from the plan you can see.

Saving can be refused:

Message What to do
Every person needs a name and a description, and every goal needs some text. Fill in or remove the empty field.
Keep at least one person. / Keep at least one goal. A plan needs one of each.
An account you picked was removed. Choose another one and save again. Someone removed that test account in the meantime; the list of accounts has been refreshed.
The plan could not be saved. Try again. Nothing was saved; try again.

A run takes a copy of the plan when it starts. Editing the plan afterwards changes the next run, never one that has already started — its people, goals and account assignments stay as they were. Test accounts are the one exception: a run looks each account up when a person’s session begins, so an account removed in the meantime leaves its person without one. Adding the same username again does not bring it back; to the run, that is a different account.
